Wrekin tenant keen to make a difference to people’s lives

How do you juggle looking a busy family life, running your own successful business, getting a purple belt in Brazilian Jujitsu and helping make a difference to people’s lives?

Chris Steele does just that.

Chris, 38 is a Wrekin tenant who lives in Muxton with his partner and young son. He recently became a member of our new Customer Committee. The Committee has a majority of tenants and has a direct link with Wrekin’s Board, ensuring the housing association’s 28,000 tenants can influence decision-making.

Chris manages to fit in his role with Wrekin around work and family life. Chris has forged a career working in the recruitment sector for the last 18 years. He then decided to setup his own recruitment business in 2019.

Chris said: “I found out about the Customer Committee via an email from the Customer Involvement Team at Wrekin. I’ve been a Wrekin tenant for a few years now and I was looking for a role where I could help people and make a difference in the future.

“Work-life balance is important to me, especially now that I have a young family. I run my own business too so I appreciated that the role was flexible and I could fit it around my busy home life.”

The Customer Committee focus on key areas, including looking how Wrekin can support customers with the cost of living crisis, looking at improving Wrekin’s services and talking to customers about find out what’s important to them.

Chris added: “I’m not from a housing background so I’m really looking forward to learning more about the sector. I’m really interested in data and how Wrekin uses it to improve the services it delivers for its customers.

“As a tenant, I have nothing but positive things to say about Wrekin, but I’m keen to hear other people’s experiences and how we can improve services for all tenants. One area I’m really keen to focus on is property condition – particularly how Wrekin deals with damp and mould."

We are on the hunt for tenants to help us make a difference to people’s lives.

We have a number of volunteer opportunities for tenants, including:

  • Surveys
  • Attending events online and in person
  • Working with us to review our services
  • Joining formal groups within Wrekin
  • Coming along to one off events, such as clean up days in neighbourhoods
